India on Saturday summoned a high-ranking Pakistani diplomat over what it said was a thwarted attack in the border state of Jammu and Kashmir by a Pakistan-based militant group, an accusation Islamabad denied.

The Indian Foreign Ministry said that it had lodged a protest with the Pakistani Chargé d'Affairs in New Delhi, adding in a statement: "India has reiterated its demands that Pakistan fulfill its international obligations and its bilateral pledges not to allow any area under its control to be used in acts of terrorism against India in any form."

On Friday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the killing of four "Army of Muhammad" fighters in a gun battle with the security forces and the recovery of a cache of weapons and explosives from them indicates that they were planning to launch a "major blow to wreak havoc and devastation" in the region ahead of the local elections there. .

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry rejected Modi's accusations, describing them as unfounded.

She said in a statement on Twitter that she considers Modi's comments "part of India's desperate attempts to divert international attention from the state's terrorism in (India-ruled Kashmir) and its sponsorship of terrorism against Pakistan."

The tension between the two nuclear-armed rivals has increased since last August, when the Modi government announced the abolition of autonomy in India's only Muslim-majority region, while Pakistan also claims sovereignty over Kashmir.
