The United States has criticized the international conference on the return of refugees and displaced Syrians recently hosted by Damascus.

In a statement issued on Friday by its deputy spokesperson, Kyle Brown, the US State Department described the support provided by Russia and the Damascus government to the Syrians who were forced to leave their homes because of the war, describing it as "superficial", adding that the international conference on the return of refugees and displaced Syrians hosted by Damascus Recently, "it does not represent a credible attempt to create the necessary conditions for the safe and voluntary return of refugees to Syria."

The ministry indicated that the last conference had only the support of a narrow group of allies of the Syrian government, adding that this matter "shows that the world does not see in such tricks anything but what they are, that is, just a play."

The US State Department accused the Russian-backed Assad government of trying to exploit millions of refugees for political purposes "in an attempt to falsely claim that the conflict is over," blaming the Damascus government for the killing of more than half a million Syrians and preventing millions more from accessing aid, in addition to bombing many From hospitals. "

The statement continued, "This does not represent the actions of a government that can be trusted to determine when refugees will be able to return in safety, and Assad should not have control over international funds allocated for reconstruction."

The ministry stressed that the United States remains "the largest humanitarian donor in the Syrian conflict," noting that Washington has provided, during the last year, humanitarian aid worth about $ 1.6 billion to meet the needs of Syrian refugees and their host communities.

The statement concluded by affirming "the commitment of the United States to the Syrian people and UN Security Council Resolution 2254 as the only way to settle the conflict politically."

This comes after Washington was subjected to strong criticism by Russia for its refusal to participate in the international conference on the return of Syrian refugees and displaced persons to their homeland.
