Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that his country will not give in to Chinese pressure on the case of Huawei's financial director Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Canada by order of the United States about two years ago.
"We do not believe in coercive diplomacy ... We really believe very strongly that if you start succumbing to this kind of pressure, you will leave yourself in a worse position in the long run," Trudeau said during an interview with the Financial Times online.
"China still believes that it can only put enough pressure on us and we will surrender, but that is exactly the opposite of our position," he said.
The case caused a diplomatic deadlock between Canada and China, which was arrested shortly after Meng arrested two Canadian citizens, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, on espionage charges.
Meng has denied the charges against her in the United States and is fighting her extradition from house arrest in Vancouver
