The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed today, Tuesday, that only Russian peacekeepers will be deployed in the Karabakh region, after Moscow, Baku and Yerevan signed an agreement on stopping the fighting in the region.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a radio interview: "An important point that I would like to draw your attention to is related to peacekeepers. We are talking about peacekeepers from Russia. that)".

She added, "I draw attention once again to the words of the Russian president, that the talk is about (deploying) Russian peacekeepers along the line of contact in Karabakh."

Zakharova stressed that the statement signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Karabakh "will be published and distributed on international platforms as soon as possible."

The spokeswoman stated that a telephone conversation took place this morning between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, in which Turkey expressed its support for the tripartite statement on Karabakh.

She added that the conversation included an exchange of views on the next steps that should be taken in light of the current situation.

Earlier today, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the start of the deployment of its peacekeepers in the Karabakh region.
