The Chinese Foreign Ministry said today that the United States is the real "empire of lies", in criticism of a report

A statement from the US State Department accuses Beijing of investing billions of dollars a year in information manipulation efforts.

The US State Department, in the report released on Thursday, said that China manipulates the world media by

Censorship, harvesting of data, surreptitiously buying foreign media outlets.

The report said that despite the unprecedented resources devoted to the campaign, Beijing suffered "major setbacks" during

Targeting democratic countries, due to the response of the local media and civil society to them.

The report was commissioned by Congress to detail the issue of information manipulation.

The Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement that the report ignored facts and was in itself false information.

The ministry added that the US State Department bodies that worked on the report were "a source of false information and a command center

'For a knowledge war‘".

"The facts have repeatedly proved that the United States is the real ’empire of lies‘," she added, according to Reuters.

The US report comes amid controversy over Beijing's attempts in the past few years to increase global influence

Media controlled by the Chinese government. Beijing seeks to combat its negative images, which it feels that the means of

International media promote it.
