"We confirm that the Russian Foreign Ministry informed ambassador (Lynn) Tracy on September 14 of the decision to declare the diplomats persona non grata,"the embassy statement said.

"We categorically reject the basis for this unjustified expulsion of diplomatic staff,"she added.

"The US authorities will respond appropriately to this,"she added.

On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned US ambassador Lynn Tracy to deliver a letter requesting that two American employees leave the country as persona non grata.

The Russian Foreign Ministry noted in its statement that the first and Second Secretaries of the US embassy are persona non grata and demands that they leave Russia within 7 days, due to their illegal activity in the country.

She pointed out that the two American diplomats who were declared persona non grata were in contact with the informant shunov for the benefit of the United States of America.

The foreign ministry added that Moscow is counting on Washington to take lessons after the expulsion of these diplomats from Russia and refrain from taking escalatory steps.

Earlier, the Russian Federal Security Service announced that the illegal activities of an informant working at the US embassy and considered a former employee of the US consulate general in the Russian city of Vladivostok were thwarted.

According to security reports, shunov carried out suspicious tasks that he received from employees of the political Department of the US embassy in Moscow, Jeffrey Selin and David Bernstein, in exchange for a material reward.

These tasks relate to the collection of information on the progress of the special military operation and mobilization operations in the Russian and other regions.
