The surprise visit comes after Yun attended the NATO summit in Lithuania, and visited Poland last week when he expressed solidarity with Ukraine and discussed ways to support it in the face of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

Yun visited Bucha, near the capital Kiev, before visiting irpin, a residential area that has been hit by large-scale rocket attacks. Yun is expected to hold a summit with Zelensky after that, the presidential office said.

South Korea, a U.S. ally and arms exporter, has faced new pressure to supply weapons to Ukraine. Yun's administration resisted those pressures and announced humanitarian and financial aid instead, amid concerns about Russia's influence on North Korea.

Yun said last week that his administration is preparing to send demining equipment and ambulances, in response to a request from Ukraine, and his country will join the NATO fund for Ukraine.

Zelensky had called on Yun to strengthen military support for Ukraine when they first met in May.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said it was considering exporting munitions to the United States, but said media reports that Seoul had agreed to send artillery shells to the United States for delivery to Ukraine were inaccurate.
