"Brave soldiers of the 68th brigade liberated the town of blagodatne,"the Ukrainian ground forces said on Facebook. It published a video showing soldiers carrying the Ukrainian flag in a destroyed building.

Valery shershin, spokesman for the units tasked with defending the "Tavriya front", which took part in the operation, was quoted as saying that the Ukrainians captured two Russian soldiers and pro-Moscow separatist fighters.

"The Ukrainian flag was raised in blagodatne,"he added, speaking about this village, which had less than a thousand inhabitants before the war.

This village is located on the outskirts of the Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions in southeastern Ukraine, where Moscow has been talking about large-scale Ukrainian attacks for about a week.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky referred to the army's" counter-offensive operations " on the front, but did not clarify whether he was talking about the major offensive for which the Kiev general staff has been preparing for months.

For his part, his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin confirmed that the Ukrainian offensive has "begun", but the Ukrainian forces have not been able to achieve their goals after several days of fighting.
