In turn, the Russian Defense Ministry announced earlier, today, that Russian troops foiled a major offensive of Ukraine and killed hundreds of pro-Kiev troops.

"The enemy launched a large-scale attack on five sectors of the front in the direction of the south of Donetsk," the ministry said on the Telegram application. "The enemy's goal was to break through our defenses from the most vulnerable sector of the front, in his opinion . The enemy did not achieve its goals and did not succeed". She noted that Russian troops killed 250 Ukrainian troops, destroyed 16 tanks, 3 infantry fighting vehicles and 21 armored combat vehicles.

The ministry reported that the head of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov was in the area where the Ukrainian attack took place. She explained that Ukraine launched its offensive using six mechanized battalions and two tank battalions. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine so far.

It remains unclear whether the attack in question marks the official start of a counteroffensive that is widely expected to be launched by Ukraine to regain some of the territory that Russian forces have controlled since the offensive began in February 2022.

For his part, the governor of the Belgorod region of Russia said that a drone attack caused a fire at an energy facility in the region in the early hours of Monday morning.

Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov added on the Telegram application, " in the Belgorod region one of the power facilities caught fire. The initial cause of the fire was the fall of an explosive device from a drone. There were no injuries or loss of life,"he said.

On Sunday, a Russian village near the Ukrainian border witnessed fighting after a new incursion by pro-Ukrainian forces, as Moscow continued its campaign of aerial bombardment.

The governor of the Russian Belgorod region, which has been hit by Ukrainian shelling in recent days, announced on Sunday that "battles" were taking place in the village of Novaya tavolyanka.

Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a message via Telegram, " a group of saboteurs has arrived. Now battles are taking place on Novaya tavolyanka. I hope that they will all be eliminated". He added that those he described as pro-Ukrainian Russian fighters had captured soldiers and offered a prisoner exchange.

Later on Sunday, the Russian military announced that it had repelled a Ukrainian "terrorist" group that tried to cross the border. "Units covering the borders of the Western Military District spotted an attempt by a sabotage group of Ukrainian terrorists to cross the river near the village of Novaya tavolyanka," the army said in a statement, adding that "the enemy was hit by artillery, its ranks dispersed and retreated".

The fighting around Novaya tavolyanka follows an incursion by pro-Ukrainian forces into the Belgorod region last month, forcing Moscow to use its artillery and Air Force on its territory.

Ukraine has never claimed responsibility for the attacks on Russian territory, but presidential adviser Mykhailo podolyak said on Sunday that the situation in the border areas "must prepare the future of Russia".
