Two weeks before the first anniversary of the most fierce conflict in Europe since the Forties of the last century, Zelensky is making only his second trip abroad since the large-scale invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the European Parliament that his country's troops fighting the Russian army "defend you," in a speech in which he called for more European military support for his country. "We are defending in the face of the most powerful anti-European force in the modern world -- we are defending ourselves, we Ukrainians on the battlefield, on your side," he told MEPs.

"Ukraine is Europe and the future of your country is in the European Union," parliament speaker Roberta mitsula said in her speech.

"Countries should quickly consider, as a next step, providing you with the long-range systems and aircraft you need to protect the freedom that many have taken for granted," she said.
