The EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement on Thursday that the European Council approved granting Ukraine a seventh package of military support worth 500 million euros in addition to 45 million euros for the training efforts of the EU Military Support mission in Ukraine.
"Today's new measures send a clear message at a sensitive time that we will continue to support Ukraine no matter how long it takes and as long as it is needed,"EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement.
On Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, arriving in Kiev with a team of European Commissioners, confirmed the EU's support for Ukraine on the eve of a European-Ukrainian summit in the country's capital. The European delegation included EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and about 15 European commissioners who met with members of the Ukrainian government.
The European Commission considered this visit a "powerful symbol" of the bloc's support for Ukraine "in the face of unjustified aggression" from Russia. "It is good to return to Kiev for the fourth time since the start of the Russian invasion, this time with my team of commissioners," she wrote on Twitter, adding: "We are here together to confirm that the EU stands firmly by Ukraine".
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced in Kiev that the EU plans to impose a new package of sanctions on Russia by the first anniversary of the start of the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
"By February 24, exactly one year after the start of the invasion, we intend to impose a tenth package of sanctions,"she said at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
She pointed out that "Russia is paying a high price today because our sanctions are undermining its economy and bringing it back a generation," noting that Brussels has been imposing a series of sanctions for about a year to limit Moscow's revenues to support its invasion.
Ukraine, which is a candidate to join the European Union in June 2022, is hosting a summit on Friday in which von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel will take part.
