In his first remarks since being appointed director of the ruling Communist Party's Foreign Affairs Bureau, China's top diplomat Wang Yi said on Sunday that China and the United States should seek dialogue instead of confrontation, and avoid mistakes made during the Cold War.
In an article published in the party's Official Gazette, Wang urged major countries to "set an example" in facing multiple challenges, noting China's enhanced cooperation with Russia during 2022.
"Over the past year, we have continuously explored the right way for the two big countries China and the United States to get along with each other,"he added in the article.
"The two countries should chart a path of compromise with mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation and put China-US relations back on the right track of safety and stability,"he stressed.
Regarding the Taiwan file, Wang said that it remains at the" core of China's core interests"and the" foundation " on which the political relationship between China and the United States is based.
Wang's tenure as foreign minister has seen a significant increase in tension between Beijing and Washington over a wide range of issues ranging from trade to Taiwan.
China on Friday announced the appointment of Chen Gang, a former Chinese ambassador to the United States, as its new foreign minister to replace Wang, who was widely expected to retain a prominent role in foreign policy after being promoted in October to the new Standing Committee of the Communist Party's Politburo, the country's top decision-making body.
The US State Department expressed concern on Friday about China's support for Russia as the war in Ukraine continues, after Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping held a video meeting.
"Beijing claims neutrality, but its behavior shows that it is still investing in strong relations with Russia," a ministry spokesman said, adding that Washington was "closely monitoring Beijing's activities".
