After US President Joe Biden adopted the US national defense law, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced its "complete" opposition to that law
Taiwan, by contrast, welcomed the legislation, saying it showed Washington's support for the self-governing island that China says should come under its rule
"China regrets and strongly opposes this US move," the foreign ministry said in a statement posted online, calling the new law a serious political provocation that blatantly interferes in China's internal affairs.
US President Joe Biden signed the 858 billion dollar defense bill into law in Washington.
In the Indo-Pacific region, the legislation authorizes increased security cooperation with Taiwan, requires expanded cooperation with India on emerging defense technologies, readiness and logistics.
A statement from Taiwan's Foreign Ministry thanked the US Congress "for demonstrating the great importance it attaches to US - Taiwan relations and strengthening Taiwan's security".
Beijing said it included items that "seriously damage peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait".
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has not ruled out resorting to force to bring the island under its control.
The law also included an amendment restricting purchases by US governments of products using electronic chips manufactured by a certain group of Chinese companies.
"The case ignores the facts to inflate the 'China threat', arbitrarily interferes in China's internal affairs, attacks and distorts the Chinese Communist Party, which is a serious political provocation for China," the ministry statement said.
