The source also said that the prospect of Ukraine not making significant gains on the battlefield in the coming weeks has led the United States and some European officials to wonder about a date to demand a settlement.

A Western European official, who was not named, said that he conveyed to the Ukrainians that it was up to them to decide when to do this, that is, when to start discussions.
