In a telephone call between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his American counterpart Anthony Blinken , Yi explained that the export restrictions imposed by Washington on China have severely damaged its legitimate rights and should be reversed, according to a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry

The US State Department said in a separate statement that during the call Blinken discussed Russia's war with Ukraine and the threats posed by the conflict to world security and economic stability.

Blinken also discussed with his Chinese counterpart the need to manage US-China relations responsibly, according to the statement.

The United States has repeatedly stressed the need for communication lines to remain open between the two countries, but has also recently warned about the repercussions of Beijing's support for the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

China, a strategic partner of Russia, has remained neutral on the Ukrainian war, criticizing Western sanctions against Russia, but did not endorse or support the military campaign.

Last week, President Joe Biden said that the United States does not seek conflict with China, while President Xi Jinping said that China is ready to work with the United States to find ways to compromise for the benefit of both sides.

These statements came ahead of the group of twenty summit in Bali next month, during which the two leaders are likely to meet on the sidelines of the summit.

A new Pentagon strategy showed that China continues to pose the greatest security challenge to the United States, and also made it clear that the threat from Beijing will determine how the US military is equipped and formed in the future.

The document released on Thursday says that a conflict with China is "neither inevitable nor desirable," but describes an attempt to prevent Beijing's dominance over key areas, in an apparent reference to Beijing's military buildup in the South China Sea and increasing pressure on the autonomous island of Taiwan.

The US Defense Strategy also warns that China is undermining US alliances in the Indo-Pacific, using its growing military to coerce and threaten neighbors.

The unclassified 80-page document refers to Russia's war in Ukraine and says that Moscow poses a serious threat to the United States and its allies through nuclear weapons, cyber operations and long-range missiles.

The strategy emphasizes that as the partnership between China and Russia continues to grow, they "now pose more serious challenges to safety and security at home in the United States, even with the continuing terrorist threats".
