During a joint press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on the sidelines of the Alliance Summit in Madrid seeking to strengthen the Eastern Alliance wing
in response to the Russian operation in Ukraine, US President Joe Biden announced that his country would strengthen its military presence in Europe so that the Alliance could " Responding to threats from all directions and in all areas: land, air and sea "
Biden said the US military presence and potential will be strengthened in Spain, Poland, Romania, the Baltic states, Britain, Germany and Italy.
"We are changing the size of our forces in Europe, given the current challenges," Biden added.
For his part, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said NATO would agree to deter so that it could deploy more combat formations and more pre-existing equipment to Eastern Europe by next year.
In previous statements, Estoltenberg pointed out that NATO was undertaking "the greatest overhaul of our collective defence since the end of the cold war."
Following his arrival in Madrid, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said NATO needed to "learn lessons from the last few months, and must review its position with regard to its east wing."
For his part, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that NATO's commitment to increasing the rapid reaction power of members closest to Russia would "make Europe safer."
"Russia poses a threat not only to Europe, but to all NATO members."
The leaders of Japan, Australia, South Korea and New Zealand participate in the summit for the first time as guests, reflecting the growing importance of the Indo-Pacific region.
