Following a gathering of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Bavaria, Germany, the French
presidency announced on Sunday that the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, had shown "great enthusiasm" for a project proposed by France on the establishment of a European political group that would "re-engage" Britain after Brexit.
During their debate, Johnson told Macron that "the idea came to him in 2016," to which the French president replied by suggesting that in this case he would grant him "intellectual property rights."
The Elysee noted that Johnson "would like there to be space where a debate outside the EU can be opened."
The first meeting of the European Political Group at the level of Heads of State and Government would be held in the second half of the current year under the Czech Presidency of the European Union.
The Elysee added, "This is great. It will make it possible to have an intergovernmental approach so that we re-engage the British and the western Balkans
According to AFP, Macron presented the project to establish a "new European group" on May 9 to the European Parliament amid a debate on accepting Ukraine's accession to the European Union under the Russian military operation in that country.
This project is aimed primarily at those States that hope to join the European Union, mainly Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, and at the western Balkans, which have been awaiting their role for several years, such as Serbia and North Macedonia.
According to the French Agency, the project also seeks to attract European States that do not wish to join the Union, such as Switzerland, Norway or even Britain, which has left it, in what has come to be known as "Brexit".
