Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced her intention to visit Egypt and meet with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo, to discuss regional and global issues, including the crisis in Ukraine and food security.

Von der Leyen, in a press conference following a meeting of EU leaders, said she "intends to visit Cairo in the middle of next month to meet with Sisi."

The visit was aimed at discussing a number of different regional and global issues, as well as addressing Ukraine's crisis and the problem of food security.

Von der Leyen also said on May 24 that there was coordination with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to support the food sector during the crisis between Russia and Ukraine.

Al-Sisi stressed the need to calm down and reach a peaceful solution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, and made all regional and international efforts to reach that solution, during his receipt of Polish President Andje Duda.

Many countries suffer from scarce wheat supplies, especially in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, and Ukraine is the world's largest supplier of wheat to many countries.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed his country's willingness to contribute to the search for options for unimpeded grain exports, including the export of Ukrainian grain from Black Sea ports.
