U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Plinkin said today that the imposition of sanctions on Russia now against the backdrop of tension with Ukraine "will have no deterrent effect."

"The primary objective of the sanctions is to deter Russian aggression, so if they are applied now, we will lose the deterrent effect."

Plinkin explained that everything the United States and its allied countries do in Europe, including the coordination of possible consequences for Russia, is to "influence the calculations."

Vladimir Putin, Russian President, convinced not to take hostile action.

The United States Secretary of State stressed that the United States and European States were preparing "for every possible scenario of developments in the situation around Ukraine."
