Today, Emmanuel Macron directed the French president to develop a new European security system in coordination with NATO and Russia.

"In the next few weeks we have to complete European proposals on a new system of security and stability, and they must be prepared among Europeans, exchanged with our NATO allies and then put up for negotiation with Russia," Macron said.

The President of France noted that this new security regime in Europe must include "strategic rearmament" and "open and strict negotiation with Russia."

The President of France pointed out that the new European security system must reject the use of force, threats and spheres of influence and recognize the right of States to participate in organizations and alliances and to build their own security structure. He was convinced that dialogue with Russia was needed to ensure the security of the old continent. "The building of Europe is based on principles and rules that will not be defined against anyone but in coordination with Russia."

Macron referred to the principle of the sovereignty of States, stressing the need to "affirm these values and punish those who violate them effectively": "Sovereignty means freedom, which is at the heart of our European project and represents a response to the undermining of stability on our continent," and a warning that the conflict in south-eastern Ukraine remains a major tension in Europe, pledging that France, in cooperation with Germany, will continue to seek a political solution within the framework of the Normandy Quartet.
