In the Belgian capital, Brussels, the spokeswoman for the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Noble Masrali, said in a press release that "the European Union has taken note of the decision of the Kazakh authorities to apply to the Collective Security Treaty Organization for assistance."

"At this stage, I can say that we took into account President Tokayev's decision to request assistance from the Collective Security Treaty Organization to send peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan for a limited period of time to help stabilize the situation," Masrali added.

Yesterday, the United States Department of State called on the authorities and demonstrators in Kazakhstan to find a peaceful solution to the state of emergency in the country.

United States State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement that "the United States is closely monitoring the situation in Kazakhstan, which is our close partner, condemning acts of violence and destruction of property and calling for restraint on the part of the authorities and demonstrators."

"We call on all in Kazakhstan to respect and protect constitutional institutions, human rights and freedom of information, including the return of Internet service."
