The White House National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, said today that the US believes there is still a chance of progress in the talks with Russia that have been held 'appropriately'.
"We were as clear as the United States - and just yesterday, the 30 NATO member States were clear in a statement by the North Atlantic Council - we are ready for dialogue with Russia," Sullivan added.
"We have had a dialogue with Russia on European security issues over the past 20 years. We have had a dialogue with the Soviet Union for decades before that, and that has sometimes led to progress, sometimes to an impasse, but we are basically ready for dialogue."
"Russia has now put on the table its concerns about American and NATO activities, and we will put on the table our concern about Russian activities that we believe are detrimental to our interests and values, and that is the basis for reciprocity that some kind of dialogue will follow," he added.
Sullivan continued that although progress could be made in some areas, the two nuclear forces were likely to continue to disagree, and did not explain which areas he believed might create unity or disparity.
The security expert concluded by saying, "Not fundamentally, our strategy will be closely coordinated, so that we have an allied unit, and then we are ready to sit down with Russia and respond positively to the idea that we can have an appropriate discussion."
