While he stressed that Iran would not be "naive" given the history of the other side's actions, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, Ali Baqri Kni, stressed that his country was optimistic about the Vienna negotiations on reviving the nuclear agreement.
"Our positions are based on the 2015 agreement between Iran and the 5 + 1 group, and our points, observations and demands are based precisely on that agreement," Baqari said.
Baqari, leading his delegation in Vienna: "Last week we prepared and presented the positions and views of the Iranian side on the final draft of the sixth round of negotiations in Vienna for the other party. This means that the Islamic Republic of Iran enters negotiations with the other party on the basis of this vision, priorities and positions."
Baqari said: "It is only natural that the other party presents its reasoning, vision and priorities, and the ongoing negotiations at the expert level are usually resolved and some differences of view resolved as the remaining issues must be discussed at a higher level between Iran and the 4 + 1 group."
He explained: "This atmosphere has prevailed in the negotiating room since we came here, and it is natural for each party to defend its positions, to give its reasoning and to pursue its interests, but I have not seen any direction that would disrupt the process of negotiations." I consider that "the atmosphere within the negotiations is very serious, but within the framework of mutual respect with the vision that the parties want to reach an agreement."
Baqri concluded by saying: "The vision, priority, seriousness and readiness of the other side are influential on the question of whether negotiations will succeed and whether or not we will reach agreement more quickly. As far as the Iranian side is concerned, I am optimistic that an agreement will be reached, but given the unhappy impression in our people's memory of the other side's past, we will certainly not be naive. "
