Warning of the possibility of repeating the situations that formed during the "Caribbean crisis" of the Cold War, Russia stressed that it had to respond rigorously to NATO actions seeking military positioning on its borders.
In a statement to the press today, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, said, "The situation for us has really worsened because our competitors and adversaries have flagrantly violated the commitments and pledges they made to us earlier.
The incident is about the prevention of military activities in their various aspects near our borders and the prevention of technical military concentration by our opponents in the territories and waters concerned, which we are witnessing more and more. "
In this context, Ryabkov stressed that Russia considers it necessary to remove the NATO military threat from its borders.
Ryabkov noted that Russia was "obliged to respond strictly to the actions of the United States and NATO" near its borders, stating: "There's no threat element here, there's only warnings."
Ryabkov asserted that the current tension in relations between Russia and the West could lead to a recurrence of the situations that formed during the "Caribbean Crisis" of 1962.
In that context, in response to a related question, he said: "If our colleagues on the other side don't realize what's going on, things can come to that. According to the logic of current events, it is very possible to wake up one day and find ourselves in similar situations. "
He continued: "That would be a failure of diplomacy and foreign policy, but there is still time to reach a common-sense agreement."
