At a time when the international community is looking to resume the Vienna negotiations, Iran has criticized France for its arms deals with the United Arab Emirates.
Commenting on France's signing of billions of euros in contracts with the Emirates, including the sale of 80 Rafale fighter jets, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatib Zadeh said France's role in destabilizing the region could not be ignored, according to the official Iranian news agency.
Observers confirmed that recent Iranian statements and criticisms of France for its military deal in the Emirates would have wide repercussions and significant strategic implications for the Vienna negotiations.
"We are witnessing the sale of tens of billions of dollars worth of weapons to the Arab States in the Gulf while intensive meetings are being held on our missiles."
He went on: "We expect France to show greater responsibility. The militarization of our region is unacceptable and the weapons sold by the French are the origin of the unrest we are witnessing. "
On the first day of a quick tour of the Gulf by President Emmanuel Macron, the Emirates signed with France a standard agreement for the purchase of 80 Rafale fighter jets for 14 billion euros.
In this round, the French President stated specifically in Saudi Arabia that "the nuclear issue cannot be addressed without addressing the regional issue. We cannot make progress without engaging our friends in the region."
Zadeh's fiancé rejected France's request to "engage" the countries of the region "to move forward" in the talks on Iran's nuclear, saying that "France knows very well that these statements have no legal or rational basis."
Five months after its cessation, negotiations on the international agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue resumed in the Austrian capital, Geneva, on 29 November between Iran and the States still party to the agreement, but have been suspended again since last Friday.
