Noting that tension had been contained in coordination between the two sides, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that clashes had erupted, today, between Iranian border guards and the Taliban.

The ministry's spokesman, Saeed Khatib Zadeh, said that a "border dispute" between local residents in southern Iran's Sistan province and northern Iran's Nimroz state had caused gunfire at the border between the parties.

Zadeh's fiancé stated that the situation had been managed and contained in coordination between border guards on both sides.

Earlier in the day, Afghanistan's Aamaj News reported clashes using heavy weapons on Afghanistan's border with Iran between Taliban fighters and Iranian border guards.

The Agency said the clashes took place in Kang District, Nimroz State, northern Afghanistan, adding that the Taliban had been able to extend control over some of the Iranian border guard checkpoints.

Iranian media confirmed that clashes had erupted due to a "border misunderstanding," and quoted "informed" officials that hostilities with the Taliban had ceased, noting that Iranian authorities were currently discussing the incident with the movement.
