In a briefing to the Security Council, US State Department Adviser Jeffrey DeLaurentis stated that "interference in Libyan elections or the use of violence may lead to sanctions by the UN Security Council."

"The threat of boycotting elections will not promote peace, and the Security Council must hold its obstructors accountable," DeLaurentis added.

Earlier in his intervention to the Security Council, the outgoing United Nations envoy, Jan Kubich, said that "Libya is experiencing a fragile political phase, and the lack of elections could lead to disputes and conflicts."

"Libyan parties have agreed on constitutional grounds for Libyan elections."

"The final results of the Libyan elections will be announced simultaneously," she said, noting that "the judiciary is the last word on the electoral process."
