On a visit aimed at achieving reconciliation after the serious crisis between Paris Washington over the Australian submarine contract, US Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Paris.
During her visit, her third foreign trip since taking office, Harris will meet French President Emmanuel Macron and attend the Peace Forum with other leaders from around the world.
It will also participate in a conference on Libya and in events to commemorate the anniversary of the end of World War I.
It is reported that in mid-September, the United States and Australia dealt a blow to Paris through a defence alliance in the Pacific, and Washington acquired a large submarine contract that was primarily promised to France.
"It's good to be in France, and I look forward to many days of fruitful discussions that strengthen our relationship," Harris said on her arrival in Paris.
The visit comes after the submarine controversy and follows the dispatch of Foreign Minister Anthony Plinkin in early October to France in a first attempt to fix the crisis.
It should be noted that US President Joe Biden also sought to resolve the dispute during a meeting with Macron last month when he told the French President that his Government had been "clumsy" in the way it handled the submarine deal with Australia.
Harris, who will meet with Macron Wednesday, is expected to confirm Biden's initiatives, which include discussions on possible US support for the French military mission against jihadists in the Sahel and plans to strengthen European defence capabilities.
"The relationship between the United States and France, as well as the transatlantic relationship between the United States and Europe, is vital to us," a senior White House official said before the trip.
"This is something that Joe Biden has stressed throughout his campaign."
