The leaders of the United States, Britain, Germany and France today called on President Ibrahim Major of Iran to seize the opportunity of a possible return by the United States
to the nuclear agreement signed in 2015 on its nuclear programme in order to avoid a "dangerous escalation," following a meeting on the margins of the Group of 20 summit in Rome, considering that Tehran is "undermining the possibility of a return to the agreement."
In a joint statement issued by French President Emmanuel Macron's office, the leaders of the four nations said that "this will be possible only if Iran changes course," and the joint statement considered that negotiations were the only safe way to avoid a dangerous escalation that would not be in the interest of any State.
"We met in Rome today to discuss the dangers to international security posed by Iran's escalating nuclear programme," the leaders said in their statement. We expressed our determination to ensure that Iran could never develop or possess a nuclear weapon. "
A source added to the States' agreement that "Iran's progress in the nuclear field and obstruction of the work of the IAEA undermine the possibility of a return to the nuclear agreement."Noting that the four leaders said, "We are convinced that it is still possible to quickly reach and implement an agreement on the re-observance of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action signed in 2015 by Iran, and six major powers with a view to ensuring that Iran's nuclear programme is limited in the long term to civilian purposes in preparation for the lifting of sanctions.""This will be possible only if Iran changes its position."
The source noted that the statement "underlines the current situation, the importance of a negotiated solution that provides for the return of Iran and the United States to full compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and provides the basis for continued diplomatic efforts to resolve the remaining points of disagreement."
