At a tripartite summit aimed at intensifying coordination with regard to the Palestinian issue, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al - Sisi hosted in Cairo the Jordanian King Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Summit addressed recent contacts and moves by the three countries at the regional and international levels, particularly those aimed at creating a real political horizon for the effective restoration of efforts to resolve the conflict on the basis of the two-State solution.

As stated in the final communiqué, Sisi and King Abdullah II confirmed the centrality of the question of Palestine, the first Arab question, and the firm positions of Egypt and Jordan in support of the brotherly Palestinian people and their just and legitimate rights.

Foremost among them is the right to reflect its sovereign and independent State on the lines of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law, the relevant resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.

He recalled that he had directed the responsible leaders of the three States to work together to develop a vision for activating efforts to resume negotiations and to work with brothers and partners for the peace process, in accordance with the terms of reference adopted.

The leaders also affirmed their rejection of "illegal Israeli actions that undermine the two-State solution and threaten the prospects for peace in the region, including the construction and expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the confiscation of land, the demolition of homes and the displacement of Palestinians from their homes. In this context, they stressed the need to respect the right of Sheikh Jarrah's residents to their homes."

The statement continued: "The leaders stressed the need to preserve the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian sacraments and to reject all practices aimed at compromising this status, as well as the importance of the historic Hashemite guardianship of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and its role in the protection of these sacraments and its Arab Muslim and Christian identity."

The leaders also welcomed the efforts of the Arab Republic of Egypt to stabilize the calm and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and called on the international community to make efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Strip by participating in reconstruction efforts and urging Israel to respond to the basic and humanitarian needs of the people of the Strip in accordance with its responsibilities under international law.

The Egyptian and Palestinian Presidents and the Jordanian King stressed the importance of continuing to work towards Palestinian national reconciliation and consulted on the ideas put forward in that context. They stressed the importance of all Palestinian parties responding to Egypt's efforts and upholding the best interests of the Palestinian people.

They further stressed the importance of the international community's continued support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the need to provide the financial support it needed to maintain its capacity to provide vital services to the Palestine refugees as mandated by the United Nations.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the leaders agreed to hold the next summit in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan at a time to be determined.
