In their last call immediately before the fall of the Afghan capital under Taliban control, U.S. President Joe Biden and his Afghan counterpart Ashraf Ghani - who fled his country last month - were not sufficiently aware of the threat to Afghanistan.

In a call lasting nearly a quarter of an hour on 23 July, the two leaders discussed military assistance, political strategy and messaging tactics, but that did not stop the country almost entirely falling to the rebels about three weeks after this call was shared with Reuters.

It should be noted that the White House declined to comment on the call.

In Ashminiah, the author of the material required anonymity, Reuters said that it had listened to the recording of the call to verify the conversation and reviewed its text.

It is recalled that in the call, United States President Joe Biden offered to assist the Afghan Government on the condition that Rich had a plan to control the escalating situation in Afghanistan, and he advised Rich to obtain the support of powerful Afghans for a military strategy and then to appoint a "warrior" in charge, referring to the Minister of Defence, General Basmullah Khan Mohammadi.

Biden said: "We will continue to provide close air support, if we know what the plan is." Days before the call, the United States of America carried out air strikes in support of Afghan security forces, in a move that the Taliban said violated the Doha peace agreement.
