Hours after the British confirmed intelligence confirming an imminent attack on the airport, the US Department of Defense confirmed an explosion in the vicinity of Kabul airport, disrupting evacuations.

The Pentagon has explained that "a suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance to Kabul's northern airport."

In a tweet, the Pentagon spokesman said that the number of victims of the explosion around Kabul airport was "unclear at this time."

Sources at the Pentagon were quoted as saying that the explosion had wounded 3 American soldiers, noting that British sources had reported the deaths of 11 people.

According to British sources, the explosion occurred near the Baron Hotel, where foreigners were staying in the vicinity of Kabul airport.

For its part, the Turkish Ministry of Defence declared that "two explosions occurred outside Kabul airport and did not cause damage to the Turkish forces."
