In a move likely to be a consequence of the recent diplomatic crisis between Madrid and Rabat, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laia, was relieved of her post.

The Ambassador of Spain to France, José Manuel, a seasoned ambassador who served several States, was appointed as Foreign Minister to succeed Arancha González Laia.

The diplomatic crisis between Madrid and Rabat was fuelled by the entry into Spanish territory of the leader of the separatist Frente POLISARIO, Ibrahim Ghali, for treatment and the use of a forged passport.

Morocco had officially expressed its regret at the position of Spain, on whose soil it was hosting Ibrahim Ghali, accused of war crimes and serious human rights violations.

Arancha was seen as a party to the diplomatic crisis, and Morocco accused her of complicity in Ibrahim Ghali's entry into Spain.

But Arancha's dismissal is not nascent today, because expectations of her departure from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have spread over the past few days, against the backdrop of what has been considered a "bad measure" of the diplomatic crisis with Morocco.

Since the beginning of the crisis, Foreign Minister Arancha Laia has been the focus of Moroccan diplomacy and has been seen as fuelling the crisis.

The Spanish Minister rejected the article, calling her country's reception of the Ghali by mistake, and said that her country had taken the initiative to help someone who was in critical health and was not, in her words, the first time this had happened.

With regard to her country's position on the issue of Moroccan Sahara, Arancha González Leia stated that Spain's responsibility in the file was to work constructively with the United Nations to find a definitive solution to the conflict (...) which requires the intervention of the international community.
