In the wake of Ethiopia's recent letter to the Security Council dated July 5, in which it rejected the intervention of the League of Arab States in the case of the Nahda Dam on the grounds that it might undermine friendly and cooperative relations between the League and the African Union,
A source responsible for the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, Tuesday, expressed the League's "dismay."
The source asserted that "Ethiopia's letter contained numerous misstatements, but the most serious part of it was the apparent search for lamentations between two regional organizations that, in the past and present, have maintained the most close and robust relations."
He stressed that "the League of Arab States is not in a position to engage in any form of conflict or confrontation with the African Union, especially since it has 10 Arab States, which are also member States of the Union."
"The League maintains various and multiple frameworks and mechanisms for consultation and joint work with the African Union and is keen to coordinate its positions on many issues, as well as the excellent friendly relationship between the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and Mr. Moussa Faqi, Chairman of the Commission of the Union."
The source added that "the interference of the League with the issue of the Al-Nahda Dam, which is based on resolutions of the Council of the League, is natural and logical, since the issue affects the interests of two of its members, Egypt and the Sudan."
The source concluded by stating that "unfortunately, the Ethiopian endeavor is trying to portray the issue as an Arab-African conflict, which is a disturbing and regrettable mistake," calling on Addis Ababa to "review this non-constructive approach."
On Tuesday, Ethiopia denounced what it considered to be the "intervention" of the League of Arab States in the dispute between Egypt and the Sudan over the Nahda Dam on the Nile River, two days before a forthcoming meeting of the Security Council.
In a statement, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "We reject the unacceptable intervention of the League of Arab States in the case of the Nahda dam, after the League submitted a request to the United Nations Security Council and the General Assembly to intervene in this matter."
Tension escalated in Ethiopia's Al-Nahda dam on the Blue Nile, after Addis Ababa announced that it had begun the second filling of the dam tank, which angered the two downstream States, Egypt and the Sudan.
