Following a joint European investigation that exposed Denmark's collusion with US intelligence, French and German government dignitaries spied on French President Emmanuel
Macron, German Chancellor and Anguilla Merkel, the US and Denmark to provide clarification on allegations of espionage against some European officials, including the German Chancellor. This angered the European Governments, who called on Washington to explain.
Following a Franco-German ministerial meeting, the French President said, "This is unacceptable among allies, and also unacceptable among European allies and partners." Merkel subsequently supported Macron's position.
The investigation revealed that Danish intelligence had helped the United States National Security Agency spy on European Union leaders, including German Chancellor Anguilla Merkel and German President Frank Walter Steinmeier.
The results of the espionage investigations were first shared with the European media, detailing Danish-American cooperation.
The discovery is a major blow to Germany, a close neighbour of Denmark, with which it has close ties.
