The General Assembly will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow, Thursday, to discuss the current situation in occupied Palestine, in the light of the failure of the Security Council to formulate a consensus position, according to the Chairman of the Arab Group at the United Nations.
The Chairman of the Arab Group at the United Nations for this month, the representative of Algeria, Sufin Memouni, said that "Bearing in mind that the Security Council has not yet been able to adopt an output document and to formulate a consensus position on the repression faced by Palestinians in the occupied territory, the Arab Group decided to call for an emergency meeting of the General Assembly."He and the Chairman of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation had submitted a letter to the President of the General Assembly in that regard.
According to the United Nations report, the Security Council met three times in emergency meetings to discuss the situation in occupied Palestine, the most recent of which was an open meeting held on Sunday, 16 May, without a statement.
Ambassador Memoni said: "At a time when we are promoting multilateralism, we strongly believe in the important role of the United Nations system as a whole, and it cannot and should not remain silent in the face of repression." "We ask him to intensify his contacts with all world leaders to put an end to the repression faced by Palestinians."
The representative of Algeria stressed that the Palestinian people had the right to have their own State within the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. "This is the only acceptable solution and the unique way to achieve real and sustainable peace in the region."
The Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Riad Mansour, said: "Place yourselves the Palestinian people if your State is occupied, if your land is confiscated, if illegal settlements are established and if people live in their homes like Sheikh Jarrah and are threatened with expulsion from their homes. What should the Palestinian people do? "
