U.S. President Joe Biden announced the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan by September 11, the effort of Biden and each of the four former presidents to end the longest American war.
These two decades have seen the deaths of more than 2300 American soldiers, the injury of tens of thousands of Americans, countless Afghan victims and the spending of more than $2 trillion in taxpayer money.
After all, the last US troops to leave, parts of Afghanistan will be left under the control of the same repressive Taliban leaders who were there in 2001. That brings the end of America's longest war.
The war in Afghanistan began in 2001 after the September 11 attacks and lasted for more than 19 years, making it the longest conflict in which the United States has participated.
