The Indonesian capital Jakarta is hosting an emergency summit between leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the senior general who came to power in Myanmar as a result of the coup d'état in early February.

Six Presidents and three Foreign Ministers representing ASEAN States (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) are meeting in Jakarta with General Min Aung Hlaing, who is presiding over the governing military junta in Myanmar, against the backdrop of continuing social unrest in the country.

He quoted a regional diplomat as confirming that all ASEAN States had agreed to meet with the Myanmar general, but would not address him during the summit as head of State.

During the meeting, other members of ASEAN are expected to press the new Myanmar military authorities to end the violence that has claimed the lives of hundreds of anti-coup protesters since early February, as well as to release the politicians held at the head of the National League for Democracy party leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Following the coup, ASEAN issued a statement refraining from predictably condemning the takeover by the military, urging that "dialogue and reconciliation continue and return to normalcy in accordance with the will and interests of the people of Myanmar."
