Following a recent controversy in Brussels following a video post showing Erdogan receiving European Commission President Ursula van der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel at the presidential compound in Ankara.
Some accused the Turkish side of not allocating a seat to the Chairperson of the Commission suited to her position according to protocol, so she had to sit on a sofa, which the Turkish Foreign Minister, born Ceaușoğlu, later denied.
Turkish President Erdogan considered Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi's remarks about the European delegation's visit to Turkey to be "insensitive and rude beyond."
Ceaușoğlu, commenting on the incident, said: "We did not wish to make any statements on this subject, but we did see that abroad this caused a reaction and unfair accusations went to Turkey. This is not the first time we have received foreign guests. "
Traditional Turkish hospitality was known throughout the world, and the meeting had been conducted in accordance with international rules and the usual protocol. Before any meeting, protocol officials from both sides met and agreed on details.
The Italian Prime Minister commented that "I do not agree at all with the behaviour of President Erdogan of Turkey, nor do I share it, I think it is inappropriate, and I am deeply sorry for the insult of UNHCR President von der Leyen."
Mario Draghi added, "With these, let's call them by their names, tyrants, with whom one, however, has to coordinate, one must be frank when expressing different visions and opinions."
Last Thursday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the Ambassador of Rome to Ankara, Massimo Gianni, against the backdrop of Draghi's remarks.
