Today Wednesday, the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stefan Dujarek, expressed the concern of the international organization over the decision of the British authorities to increase their nuclear arsenal, noting that this could be detrimental to global stability.

Dujarek noted that the United Nations welcomes the commitment of Britain in its comprehensive vision of security, defence and foreign policy to a world free of nuclear weapons, disarmament, arms control and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

The speaker said: "However, we express our concern about the decision of Britain to increase its nuclear arsenal, which is contrary to its obligations under article 6 of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and could have a detrimental effect on global stability and efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons."

Media reports had indicated that Britain looked forward to including more nuclear warheads in its army arsenal.

According to British newspaper The Guardian, the number of nuclear warheads in the British Armed Forces arsenal should increase by 40 percent, which saw why the British nuclear arsenal needed to be confronted with Russia, especially as it approached another powerful "anti-Western" country, China.
