An official source was quoted in Egypt's first response to Turkey regarding the "resumption of diplomatic contacts" between Cairo and Ankara.

"There is no such thing as the" resumption of diplomatic contacts, "between Cairo and Ankara," he said, adding that "the Egyptian and Turkish diplomatic missions exist at the level of chargé d'affaires, which communicate with the State of accreditation in accordance with established diplomatic norms."

The source stressed that "improving the relationship between the two countries requires taking into account the legal and diplomatic frameworks that govern relations between States on the basis of respect for the principle of sovereignty and the requirements of Arab national security."

Egypt "expects any State looking to establish normal relations with it to abide by the norms of international law and the principles of good-neighbourliness and to refrain from attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of the States of the region," while stressing the importance of strong ties and links between the peoples of the two countries.

It should be noted that this followed statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in which he said that "cooperation between his country and Egypt in the areas of intelligence, diplomacy and the economy continues," stressing that "friendship between the Egyptian and Turkish peoples is greater than relations between the Egyptian and Greek peoples."

Erdoğan's remarks came hours after his Foreign Minister, born Jawesh Oglu, spoke about Ankara starting diplomatic contacts with Cairo. He continued: "We have contacts with Egypt at the intelligence or foreign ministry level." He says: The resumption of relations will be carried out in small steps according to a particular strategy.
