Today, Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the US position on the Sahara issue would cause new violence in the region.

A statement issued by the ministry said, "The recognition by the United States of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara may impede the United Nations efforts aimed at solving the problem."

The ministry described Washington's decision in this regard as a new unilateral move that threatens stability in the region.

The statement continued: "With this decision, the Donald Trump administration proceeded to destroy the internationally recognized legal foundations for the settlement of the Sahara problem, which requires determining the final status of this region through a referendum."

The statement stated that "this new position of the United States may seriously hinder the efforts of the United Nations to push for a settlement of the Sahara issue and lead to a worsening of relations between the parties directly concerned and lead to a new cycle of violence in the Sahara and Sahel region."
