Many men are affected by the topic of baldness and hair loss, but there are several ways to get a better look, from bold glasses to well-groomed eyebrows, there are many ways to compensate for hair loss

Michael Douglas – not that one, but the founder of hair brand MD London and boyfriend of Davina McCall – has recommended the Prince of Wales shave all his hair off. “He’s got great teeth,” he said. “If you’ve got great teeth it doesn’t matter how bad your hair is or how bald you are. People are so mesmerized by your smile. You’re done.”

Well, William must be blushing. The Prince, who was once voted “Sexiest Bald Man Alive” (are you hearing this, Stanley Tucci?), has settled into his baldness and carries it off pretty well, but how to address it and style yourself is a sensitive issue.

The idea that great teeth will distract is one line of thinking (and let’s face it, there is barely a celebrity or influencer out there who hasn’t had blinding dental work). Others rely on strong glasses to reframe the face or other signature accessories such as scarves.

It’s never simply a case of shaving it all off, says hair loss expert Spencer Stevenson of Spex Hair. “It’s a very difficult, arduous process for men to come to terms with. By losing your hair you’re losing a part of yourself, and your identity. So it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution to say that shaving it all off is easy for a guy,” says Stevenson, who runs The Bald Truth radio show to help men who are grappling with the issue.

If you’re noticing thinning hair, don’t reach for the razor right away. See the approach taken by Prince William, for example, in keeping the back and sides cropped, so as not to emphasize the contrast between thinner and fuller hair.

“This is the most important thing I can stress. If you’re looking into treatments to tackle it, it’s essential to educate yourself,” says Stevenson, because so much has been made about tackling baldness with hair treatments on celebrities like Wayne Rooney and James Nesbitt, and social media algorithms spamming men with “quick solutions”.

“The truth is there are no easy fixes and a man has to think really carefully about whether he wants to fight his baldness with a hair-loss treatment,” Stevenson recommends looking to the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons for reputable institutions. “Don’t think that a quick flight to Turkey and a few weeks can fix it,” he warns.

A bold pair of glasses, for example, because a stronger profile can carry off a thick-framed pair of spectacles (we’re not talking Elton John here, but neither do you want standard issue Harry Hill specs – somewhere in between is more harmonious). Similarly, note how Tucci’s become the master of neck adornment too, whether a foulard tucked into a shirt collar or lightweight scarf at an evening event, he frames his face intelligently (and keeps warm too).

And while it sounds like stating the obvious, a hat in warmer climates is an essential part of your everyday attire. Similarly, if you’re prone to shiny skin, this will extend across your bald spot, so opt for a moisturizer that’s water-based rather than oil-based.

There are still tiny follicles on the head, even on bald ones, so it’s important not to ditch the shampooing, otherwise, you run the risk of flaking. Opt for shampoos that tackle dry hair to counteract this.

By all means, make sure your teeth are as perfect as can be – although I would argue that a Love Island approach is almost as unattractive as yellowed tombstones – but the fact that there’s no hair to distract from your face does mean you might want to just take that bit of extra care with grooming.

Make sure your eyebrows are tidy, for example, and skincare has taken care of. It doesn’t have to be an all-out teeth straightening procedure, but some basic tenets will help you feel more ready to put your best face forward.
