Health experts in the Canadian province of New Brunswick have documented hundreds of people with a mysterious illness, the source said, whose symptoms range from hallucinations and muscle atrophy to vision problems and memory loss.

These symptoms first began to appear in 2015 in a small group of patients, before spreading further and reaching more than 200 people.

"In addition, an unusual number of these cases affect young people, who do not show symptoms of dementia or signs of other neurological problems, "the New York Post explained.

"I am particularly concerned about the increase in the numbers of people with neurotic syndrome, which manifests itself at a young age,"wrote neurologist Dr. Allaire Marrero, in a letter dated January 30, 2023, to the Chief Medical Officer of New Brunswick and the federal director of Public Health.

"Over the past year, I have followed 147 people with this disease, ranging in age from 17 to 80 years,"he added.

For its part, the British newspaper "Daily Mail" revealed that since 2021, nine deaths have been recorded attributed to the mysterious disease.

A previous government investigation had concluded that "environmental toxins may be behind this disease". The investigation was abruptly closed in 2021.

In its final report for February 2022, the New Brunswick Public Health Agency announced that there was, in fact, "no evidence of an idiopathic neurological syndrome".

Activists say the unrest may be linked to the use of pesticides in the rural province.

It is about "glyphosate", a widely used herbicide, especially broad-leaved weeds that compete with agricultural crops.
