British Academy Film Awards also known as the BAFAs (or BAFTAs), opened today 19 February 2023, its activities, honouring the best national and foreign films of 2022.
The nominations were announced on 19 January 2023 via a global live stream, hosted by actors Hayley Atwell and Toheeb Jimoh, from the arts charity's newly redeveloped HQ at 195 Piccadilly, London. The EE Rising Star Award nominees, which is the only category voted for by the British public, was announced on 17 January 2023.
The German-language epic anti-war drama All Quiet on the Western Front received the most nominations with fourteen, tying the record set by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) as the most nominated non-English language film in the awards' history; The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once followed with ten nominations each. The former two are also one of the most nominated titles in BAFTA history, coming second (alongside 2007's Atonement) only to Gandhi (1982), the most nominated film at the BAFTAs with sixteen nods.
However, the nominations were also notable for largely omitting Avatar: The Way of Water, The Fabelmans and Top Gun: Maverick, frontrunners at several other awards shows, from major categories, and for Bardo, Glass Onion, RRR and Women Talking being completely shut out.
The ceremony will be hosted by Swazi-English BAFTA and Academy Award-nominated actor Richard E. Grant while British television personality Alison Hammond will host from backstage, giving viewers what's billed as an "access-all-areas experience". Additionally, presenters Vick Hope and BBC Radio 1 film critic Ali Plumb will host the red carpet pre-show. The broadcast will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, and be syndicated globally in eight countries.

The Prince and Princess of Wales of Wales joined stars on the BAFTAs red carpet at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday night, where Kate gave the A-listers a run for their money in a show-stopping monochrome ensemble.
The princess teamed her ethereal, one-shouldered white gown with dramatic opera gloves, wearing her hair sleek and straight and accessorising with a black clutch and a bold pair of Zara earrings. Prince William looked dapper in a slick black suit with a double-breasted velvet jacket and bow tie.
The biggest winner is expected to be the black comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, which has amassed 10 nominations thanks in part to the near-effortless chemistry between leads Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell. Everything Everywhere All at Once is also up for 10 prizes, though the ultra-wacky comedy-drama starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis is very Marmite.
There'll also be a live performance from Mercury Prize award-winning hip-hop artist Little Simz, and a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II led by Helen Mirren.
Anchoring proceedings at Royal Festival Hall in London's Southbank Centre are Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond, and anyone who's ever seen Alison Hammond do anything will testify that her involvement alone will make the show worth watching.
Fame, money, and adulation are all well and good, but gleaming trophies, in this case, the iconic BAFTA mask, are the sprinkles on top of the cherry on top of the icing on top of the multi-layered cake. Read on as we explain how to watch the 2023 BAFTAs live stream from anywhere. We've also listed the BAFTA nominees further down the page.
