Within the framework of the economic crisis that the world is experiencing at the moment , and during the recent publication of the latest disappointing quarterly results, the head of the group Mark Zuckerberg said that the number of employees in the company should not increase by the end of 2023, it should even decline a little.
The newspaper "The Wall Street Journal" said that the company "meta", the owner of the social networking platforms Facebook and Instagram, intends to lay off thousands of employees starting this week, as do several other companies in the field of technology such as Twitter.
The announcement is expected to be made on Wednesday and thousands of employees will be affected in the first such action in the history of the social media giant.
According to the figures of September 30, the "meta" Group employs about 87 thousand employees worldwide
Last Thursday, two groups in Silicon Valley, "stripe" and"Lyft", announced the dismissal of a large number of their employees, while the Amazon group froze hiring. As soon as Elon Musk, the president of Tesla and the richest man in the world, took over the Twitter platform, he laid off about half of its 7,500 employees.
Online platforms whose economic model is based on advertising are suffering, especially from advertisers cutting their spending against the backdrop of global inflation and rising interest rates.
The net profit of the "meta" group fell to 4,4 billion dollars in the third quarter of the year (-52 percent year-on-year).
Zuckerberg said in late October: "we are facing a volatile macro-economy, increased competition, loss of advertising and increasing costs of our long-term investments," stressing that "the prospects for our product, from what I see, look better than some comments indicate".
But the next day the group's stock fell by 24,56 percent on the Wall Street Stock Exchange.
