In 2013, a project was launched to establish a gas pipeline known as "Mid Cat" between Catalonia, northeastern Spain, and southeastern France, which was abandoned in 2019 because there was no agreement on its financing.

During a press conference in Berlin, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he had shown great interest in the pipeline, which the continent "today lacks significantly," explaining that the pipeline should have been established between Portugal and Spain through France to Central Europe.

Although the German chancellor's call for a new gas line or the neighbourhoods of the old project did not provide her with any details during his speech, Spain revived calls for the construction of the "Mid-Cat" gas pipeline, against the backdrop of the Russian operation in Ukraine.

It should be noted that Europe is looking daily for how to compensate for the Russian gas shortage before winter, and the pipeline known as MidCat was the last of the research plans

It should be noted that Spain and Portugal do not import Russian gas once and for all, and the Iberian Peninsula's gas network is completely isolated from the European gas network, hence the importance of this project for the Central European States only.

According to the Financial Times, Ms. Teresa Ribera, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Climate Change of Spain, the MidCat rehabilitation process takes no more than 9 months.

With regard to the "Mid-Cat" line, Russian academic in international politics Dimitri Viktorowicz pointed out, Algerian gas line access points to Spain are far from MidCat and the French border The distance is about 900-1000 kilometers, so extending new pipes along this distance takes a lot of time. not just 9 months but years, contrary to what Europe promotes That line solves only part of the issue, and the old continent will not be able to dispense with Russian gas in the short and medium term.
