Although still below its all-time high, spot prices for natural gas in Europe exceeded $1900 per thousand cubic meters, on Thursday, for the first time since early March

Higher prices come as European governments race to fill underground gas stores in an effort to fuel households enough to keep lights and homes warm during winter.

The August futures price at the TTF Center in the Netherlands rose to $1926 per thousand cubic meters, or 182.65 euros per megawatt hour in household terms for European consumers, overall, prices have risen 7% since trading began on Thursday.

The European Union, which receives about 40% of its invasive needs from Russia, is trying to abandon those imports. Last month, Gazprom reduced its supply via the Nord Stream pipeline to Germany by 60%, citing technical problems arising from sanctions related to Ukraine. The pipeline is also due to be shut down due to its annual maintenance for 10 days next week, which has raised concerns that the gas flow will not be triggered again.

More problems on the European energy front were averted on Wednesday after Norway ended the country's oil and gas strike, and if the problem had not been resolved, Europe's natural gas prices would have been restored - or even surpassed - all-time highs in March, Rystad Energy analyst Le Meng Pang told CNBC.
