In the context of the Egyptian State's efforts to become a regional centre for the exchange of electricity on the brunette continent and the Middle East, the Egyptian Government has revealed the existence of an Egyptian project to complete the "electrical connection," between Egypt and the North African countries in full.

In a report, the Council of Ministers' Information Centre reported that there were plans to connect electricity between Egypt and Libya, Egypt and the Sudan, as well as a future Egyptian project to connect electricity with North African countries.

The Egyptian Government plans to increase the volume of electricity exported to Libya by 12 times the current electricity connectivity capacity between the two sides, according to the Egyptian report.

The report indicates that studies are under way to increase the capacity of the Cairo-Libya power line from 150 megawatts currently, up to 2000, describing the project as "a first phase to complete the electricity connection between the North African States."

The government report revealed that, at the start of operation in April 2020, the line between Egypt and the Sudan reached 80 megawatts, and there is a study to increase its capacity to 300 megawatts, after the installation of the necessary electrical missions.

The electricity link between Egypt and the Sudan had reached 170 km in length by 100 km on the Egyptian side and 70 km on the Sudanese side.

Ambassador Jamal Bioumi, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs of Egypt, notes that Egypt has already submitted proposals on "Arab connectivity," as well as a proposal on electrical connectivity with North African countries, which was ratified and included in the final list of cross-regional projects, to the February 2021 summit of the African Union.
