Noting the importance of waiting until legal verification of the project is completed, the German government spokesman, Steffen Hebeschtright, said that the government agreed to verify that the "Nord Stream 2" gas pipeline project to transport Russian gas to Europe through Germany was legally compliant with European energy standards.

Earlier, the German Minister for Foreign Affairs, Annalina Burbeck, said that the Nord-2 gas transmission line was incompatible with European legislation and therefore Germany could not agree to it now.

The "Nord Stream 2" project involves the extension of a gas pipeline some 1230 kilometres long under the Baltic Sea, with a capacity of 55 billion cubic metres per year, from the Russian coast to Germany.

Last February, U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price announced that Washington may take new decisions on sanctions for the Nord Stream 2 (Nord Stream 2) gas pipeline project.

Washington sanctioned the project in December 2019, and demanded that the contributing companies immediately stop extending the pipeline.
